An Avondale man carjacked a motorist at a gas station in the North Side neighborhood last week, prosecutors said, but a second offender remains at large.

Police arrested 18-year-old Roger Salgado at his home on the 2900 block of North Wisner after the victim identified him in a photo line-up, officers said.

The victim, 25, told police that two men approached him as he prepared to fill his vehicle’s tank at the Shell station, 3001 West Belmont, around 4:25 a.m. on Oct. 25. The men tried to punch the victim and then threatened to shoot him unless he gave them his car, prosecutors said. No weapon was seen by the victim, but he surrendered his 2006 Nissan Maxima anyway.

Prosecutors charged Salgado with felony vehicular hijacking. Judge Charles Beach set bail at $10,000 and ordered Salgado to go onto electronic monitoring if he can post a 10% deposit bond.

Police said surveillance video showed two offenders arrive at the service station in a Honda SUV that a driver reported stolen four days earlier. The men then approached the victim and demanded his vehicle, the officers said. No one is charged with the earlier car theft.
