4 Shot Dead After UPS Truck Hijacked

Four people were shot dead after a robbery and truck hijacking came to a bloody end at an intersection in Miramar, south Florida. FBI Special Agent in Charge George Piro says the two robbery suspects, a UPS driver, and a person in a nearby vehicle were killed in a shootout at the end of a 20-mile chase, CNN reports. The incident began with the armed robbery of a jewelry store in Coral Gables, around 5 miles west of Miami. A law enforcement source tells the Miami Herald that the two suspects posed as postal workers to gain access to the store. The source says a female employee in the store was injured when a bullet a robber fired into the floor ricocheted and hit her in the forehead.

Police say the suspects hijacked the UPS truck and kidnapped the driver after leaving the store. The FBI says the suspects fired at police during the chase. At one point, the trail of police vehicles behind the truck stretched for around half a mile, according to CNN. The chase ended when the truck encountered stopped traffic, and it’s not clear whether police or the suspects fired first. The AP reports that when he was asked if the driver or bystander could have been shot by police, Piro said: “It’s very, very early on in the investigation and it would be completely inappropriate to discuss that. We have just began to process the crime scene.” A UPS spokesman said the company was “deeply saddened” to learn the driver was “a victim of this senseless act of violence.” (Read more armed robbery stories.)
