Sally Field Arrested in Washington DC During Jane Fonda-Organized Climate Change Protest

In Norma Rae, Sally Field’s character inspires her fellow workers to get behind the cause of unionizing. In real life on Friday, Sally Field helped fellow protesters to get behind the cause of climate change—and got arrested for it, the latest celebrity to join Jane Fonda in being detained for demonstrations over the past couple of months in Washington, DC. TMZ reports the 73-year-old actress was taken away by Capitol Police after protesting on the building’s steps with others as part of Fonda’s “Fire Drill Fridays” initiative, which focuses on a different aspect of the environment each week. This week, per USA Today, the topic centered on a “just transition” for workers and communities moving to a clean-energy economy.

In October, Field had offered encouragement online for Fonda’s protests, tweeting a raised-fist emoji along with news about Fonda being arrested. Field gave a speech in the rain Friday before she herself was arrested, tying her part in Norma Rae to the topic of the day, and imploring everyone to act: “I am a mother, I am a grandmother, the time is now.” USA Today notes that other stars who’ve been arrested along with Fonda so far include Ted Danson, Diane Lane, Sam Waterston, Rosanna Arquette, and Piper Perabo. Fonda herself doesn’t appear to have been arrested Friday, with TMZ noting she has to be careful not to earn a fifth arrest, as that could lead to a good chunk of jail time.
